I have learned to believe in harmony over balance. Balance only exists in physics, not so much in life. Harmony is what I strive for. When I’m with my family and friends – I’m with my family and friends. When I’m with my clients – I’m with my clients. Harmony is about being present and in the moment.
I grew up in a household without harmony. Both my parents owned their respective businesses as well as a hobby farm – cows, pigs, chickens, turkeys, a dog, a cat, a few gold fish and the odd garden snake. My parents worked a ton in their business – six and a half days a week was normal. As much as they worked, neither businesses really enabled them to live life on their terms – their businesses, as well as the farm, were not designed to run overly well without them – thus we never went far from home and if we did, never too long. The end result – I grew up resenting business because it took them away from me.
Growing up, I struggled in school. In fact, I failed grade two. That’s when the bulling started. By the time I was in grade six I had been enrolled in seven different schools. It was at this time that I learned about the military – specifically the paratroopers who parachuted into Normandy, France, on D-Day, June 6th, 1944. I made a decision right then and there that I would be a paratrooper and never again would I be bullied – nor would someone else get bullied on my watch. I was 19 when I joined the Canadian Armed Forces and volunteered for the Canadian Airborne Regiment shortly after.
I have played rugby for 25 years, from club rugby to representative rugby, winning provincial a national championships.
From childhood, to the military, to rugby, and all the years of business to business sales and marketing, every experience has been leveraged to become a business coach and speaker.
I launched our business coaching practice so that small business owners and entrepreneurs could avoid the many pitfalls of ownership and entrepreneurship – especially the boat anchor, a business they drown in, one that consumes the owner to the point where he or she looses touch with those that really matter.
Your business is a vehicle to enable you to live life on YOUR terms. For that to happen, it must be profitable.
You know. Building a profitable business can be hard. I get it. Running a business that isn’t profitable is also hard… Choose your hard.
